CSS Albemarle

CSS Albemarle_One Pager

On October 30, 1864, Lieutenant William B. Cushing, USN, reported to Rear Admiral David D. Porter, USN, "I have the honor to report that the rebel ironclad Albemarle is at the bottom of the Roanoke River."   This one-pager reveals the story behind the Confederate ironclad ram, CSS Albemarle, constructed in 1864, the success it had against the U.S. Navy in North Carolina waters until Lieutenant Cushing attacked and sank the ram with a spar torpedo from the steam launch Picket Boat Number One.
