The collection includes letters from Walker to his wife, Rebecca; Elizabeth P. Grimes (James Grimes' wife), H. W. Pickering, Joseph Henry, and Admiral David Porter. Topics included cover the James W. Grimes estate, Andrew Johnson's impeachment trial, the Schley affair, and the Isthmian Canal Commission. Materials on Jesse James, the Younger brothers, and a bank robbery in Minnesota are also included.

Walker was an instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy; secretary, then chairman of the Lighthouse Board; served as Chief of the Navigation Board; was a member of the Nicaragua Canal Commission; and president of the Isthmian Canal Commission.
