Ammen, Daniel
Papers, 1836-1898

Collection contains correspondence, papers, documents, photographs, dueling pistols, and blueprints concerning Admiral Ammen's career in the U.S. Navy and his activities as Secretary of the Isthmian Canal Commission (1872-1876), as representative from the U.S. to the Interoceanic Canal Congress at Paris in 1879, and his various efforts in support of the Nicaraguan canal route. Correspondents include Frederick Douglass, Millard Fillmore, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln, William Tecumseh Sherman, Zachary Taylor, and John Tyler, and the Nicaraguan Canal Association. Also contains papers relating to the design and construction of the Ammen ram, a small coast-defense vessel; a prototype, Katahdin, was completed and accepted for service on 4 January 1896.

Gillespie, Archibald H.
Papers, 1845-1860

Collection consists of correspondence, documents, and personal papers of Archibald H. Gillespie. Includes materials related to Gillespie's mission to John Charles Fremont, the Bear Flag revolt, California's first Constitution, the Gold Rush in San Francisco, and Robert Field Stockton's attempt to establish a civil government in California. Also includes a narrative by Gillespie about the Battle of San Pasqual. Receipts, bills of sale, and accounts in the collection indicate commercial activities in the Territory and State of California from 1848-1856.

Lancey, Thomas C.
Papers, 1846-1855

Collection consists of historical notes, loose papers, clippings, and ephemera of seaman Thomas Lacey, chiefly concerning the American conquest of California, 1846-1849, with particular emphasis on naval operations. Includes his original holograph journal kept while stationed on board the U.S. Sloop of War Dale, some of his correspondence, personal papers and biographical data. Contains common place books, lists of ship passengers to California, lists of military officers, and biographical information of California pioneers.


Price, Rodman McC.
Papers, 1847-1884

Collection consists of correspondence, accounts, and agreements pertaining to suits, including Price v. Dewey, instituted by Price for the recovery of San Francisco real estate purchased in 1847, including testimony, evidence, and miscellaneous legal papers.
