Surprise I (Sloop)

The first Surprise, a sloop purchased by the Continental Navy in 1777 and commanded by Capt. Benjamin Dunn, was ordered in April of that year to join Andrew Doria and Fly in clearing the Cape May channel of British ships. No record of her subsequent career has been found.

Surprise, a brig built at Vergennes, Vt., in the Summer of 1814 for service in Commodore Macdonough's Lake Champlain fleet, was renamed Eagle (q.v.) on 6 September 1814.
