SSgt. Edward A. Carter Jr. (T-AK-4544)

The first U.S. Navy ship to be named for Staff Sgt. Edward A. Carter Jr., US Army (26 May 1916-30 January 1963) who received the Medal of Honor for his actions on 23 March 1945 during World War II. He was one of seven African-American soldiers who were awarded the Medal of Honor on 13 January 1997 by President William J. [Bill] Clinton.

The first Edward A. Carter Jr. (T-AK-4544) was built at a date and place unknown as American Nebraska; delivered for commercial service, then operated under various additional names including Susan, Nebraska, Nedlloyd Hudson, and OOC Innovation. Acquired by the Navy on 1 March 2001 from Maersk Lines Ltd. (MLL) of Norfolk, Va. under a five-year charter to the Military Sealift Command (MSC); converted for military service at Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Norfolk, Va.; renamed SSgt. Edward A. Carter, Jr. on 12 June 2001; placed in service on 13 June 2001.
