Niantic (YTB-781)

1965-2006

A city, river, and bay in the state of Connecticut.

(YTB-781: displacement 283 (light), 356 (full); length 109 (overall),  107 (waterline)-; beam 31'0" (extreme), 29'0" (waterline); draft 14'0" (maximum navigational) ; speed 12.0 knots; complement 12; class Natick)

Niantic (YTB-781) was laid down on 10 December 1964 at Marinette, Wisc.,  by the Marinette Marine Corp.; launched without ceremony on 7 September 1965; delivered to the Navy on 10 November 1965; and placed in service in the Fourteenth Naval District in June 1966.

Assigned to the Fourteenth Naval District, headquartered at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the large harbor tug Niantic performed the many very necessary duties of her type in the crowded waters of the Pacific Fleet's base until taken out of service and strickenm from the Naval Vessel Register on 26 April 2006. She was disposed-of on 11 February 2008  by the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service, for re-use/conversion.
