Manuwai (YFB-16)

1940-1954

The Navy retained the name carried by this vessel ("water fowl" in Hawaiian) at the time of her acquisition.

(YFB‑16: displacement 290 tons; length 146'1"; beam 40'6"; draft 10'1"; speed 8 knots)

Manuwai  -- a wooden-hull ferry completed in November 1927 at Portland, Ore., by Supple & Martin -- was acquired by the Navy from Young Bros., Ltd., Honolulu, T.H., and, having been designated as a ferryboat (YFB-16), was placed in service on 9 July 1940.

Manuwai served in Pearl Harbor throughout her naval career, that included the Japanese attack of 7 December 1941. On 28 February 1949, the wooden ferry was placed out of service, in reserve, at Pearl Harbor and put in dry storage on the deck of the aircraft transportation lighter YCV‑12. She was stricken from the Naval Register on 17 September 1954.
