Gould Island (YFB-31)

1942-1947 

An island in Narragansett Bay near Newport, R.I., Harbor.

(YFB-31: displacement 569; length 177'0"; beam 54'0"; draft 9'6"; speed 13 knots)

The steel-hulled diesel-electric ferry Hudson – built in July 1941 at East Boston, Mass., by General Ship & Engineering Works – was acquired from Electric Ferries, Inc., of New York City, N.Y., on 4 April 1942, for assignment to the Naval Operating Base (NOB), Newport, R.I., for use at the Naval Torpedo Station. Named Gould Island (YFB-31) on 11 April 1942, she was placed in service at NOB Newport on 14 April 1942.

Gould Island -- converted for Navy use by the Thames Shipyard, Inc., New London, Conn. – served at the Naval Torpedo Station, Newport, R.I.  Delivered to the War Shipping Administration for return to her former owners on 25 May 1946 , she was stricken from the Naval Register on 28 January 1947.
