Fearnot (Supply Ship)

1861-1866

The Navy retained the name carried by this vessel at the time of her acquisition.

(Supply Ship: displacement 1,012; length 178'0"; beam 35'0"; depth of hold 23'6"; armament 6 32-pounder rifles)

Fearnot -- built by G. W, Jackman, Jr., of Newburyport, Mass.-- was purchased by the Navy on 20 July 1861; and commissioned on 28 August 1861, Acting Master Edward H. Faucon in command.

From the time of her arrival at Key West, Florida, on 17 September 1861, Fearnot served as coal and supply ship for the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, sailing out of Key West to Ship Island, and after its fall, New Orleans. Her last service, from October 1865 to May 1866, was in carrying surplus ordnance to Pensacola, and guarding the large amounts of ammunition accumulated there.

Fearnot arrived at Boston on 29 May 1866, and there was decommissioned on 18 July 1866. Ultimately, she was sold on 3 October 1866.
