Falkner (YFB-26)

1944-1948

An island off the coast of Connecticut.

(YFB-26: length 65'0"; breadth 13'0"; shaft horsepower 300)

Authorized in accordance with the Maximum War Effort Program, Falkner (YFB-26) was laid down on 15 December 1943 at Cape May, N.J.,  by Cape May Shipbuilding, Inc.; launched on 17 March 1944; departed her building yard on 9 May 1944 for the Naval Operating Base (NOB), Norfolk, Va.; arrived at her destination on 10 May and was placed in service on 11 May 1944.

Assigned to the Fifth Naval District., Falkner performed ferry duty through the end of World War II, until 14 August 1946 when she was placed in caretaker status. Placed out of service and in  reserve on 10 October 1946, she was assigned to the Severn River Naval Command on 1 May 1947.

Reported as surplus to Navy needs, and thus available for disposal, on 23 January 1948, Falkner was stricken from the Naval Register on 19 February 1948. Purchased by Mr. L. E. Castell of Bayside, N.Y., on 18 June 1948, the former naval ferry was delivered to her purchaser six days later, on 24 June 1948.
