The motorboat Barracuda, built in 1912 at Marblehead, Masschusetts, by James E. Graves, was acquired by the Navy on 18 June 1917 on free lease from Mr. R. W. McEwan. Given the designation SP-845, she was commissioned on 31 October 1917, Boatswain Seward Scharff, USNRF, in command. Assigned to the section patrol, 3d Naval District, Barracuda spent her entire naval career patrolling the waters around New York. Decommissioned on 13 February 1919, she was returned to her owner.
