APL-24

1945-1962

(APL-24: displacement 2,660 (full load); length 261'2"; beam 49'2"; complement 71; troop capacity 583; class APL-2)

The non-self-propelled barracks ship APL-24 was laid down on 24 July 1944 at Stockton, Calif., by the Pollock-Stockton Ship Building Co.; launched on 26 September 1944; and accepted and placed in service at Stockton on 24 July 1945.

Originally slated for service on the east coast, APL-24 was retained on the west coast, detached from the 12th Naval District on 6 December 1945 and taken to a berthing area at San Diego, arriving on 14 December, via San Pedro (12-13 December). Placed out of service on 15 January 1947 in the interests of inactivation programs then underway, the non-self-propelled barracks ship was placed "out of service, in reserve" on 24 March 1947 and in inactive status on 30 June of the same year.

Taken to Long Beach, Calif., on 5 September 1958, then back to San Diego on 2 July 1959, she was transferred to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, arriving on 23 February 1960. APL-24 was ultimately stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 April 1962.
