USS Texan (ID # 1354), 1918-1919

USS Texan, a 8615 gross ton cargo ship and troop transport, was built at Camden, New Jersey, in 1902 as S.S. Texan. She was acquired by the U.S. Navy in March 1918 and placed in commission as USS Texan (ID # 1354). Initially assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service as a cargo ship, she made three round-trip voyages to France during the remaining months of World War I and another soon after the 11 November Armistice. Beginning in January 1919 Texan was converted to a troop transport and used to bring American veterans home from the former European war zone. She was decommissioned in August 1919 and turned over to the U.S. Shipping Board for return to her owners, the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company.

This page features, and provides links to, all the views we have concerning USS Texan (ID # 1354).
