-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS --
USS Ohioan (ID # 3280), 1918-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Ohioan (American Freighter, 1914)
USS Ohioan, a 14,500 ton (displacement) cargo ship,
was built at Sparrows Point, Maryland, in 1914 as the 6646 gross
ton commercial freighter of the same name. Acquired by the Navy
in August 1918, she was placed in commission at that time and
subsequently made two voyages to France with cargo needed to support
the First World War combat effort. In December 1918, at the conclusion
of her second trip, Ohioan was transferred from the Naval
Overseas Transportation Service to the Cruiser and Transport Force
and began conversion to a troop
transport. Over several months, beginning in early 1919, the
ship brought home more that 8000 American war veterans. USS Ohioan was decommissioned in October 1919 and
returned to her owner, the American Hawaiian Steamship Company of New York. S.S. Ohioan operated
commercially until October 1936, when she was wrecked near San Francisco, California.
