USS Moccasin (Submarine # 5, later SS-5), 1903-1922.
Later renamed A-4

USS Moccasin, a 107-ton Holland-type submarine built at Elizabethport, New Jersey, was commissioned in January 1903. She was used for training and experimental work at Newport, Rhode Island, during 1903-1904 and was then laid up. In July-October 1909 the submarine, and her sister Adder, were transported to the Philippine Islands by the collier Caesar. Moccasin was recommissioned for Asiatic Fleet service in February 1910 and thereafter primarily operated in Manila Bay, with occasional voyages to other parts of the Philippines. Renamed A-4 in November 1911, she had patrol and convoy duties in the Manila area during World War I. USS A-4 was decommissioned in December 1919 and designated SS-5 in July 1920. Later used as a target, she was sunk in January 1922.

This page features, and provides links to, nearly all the views we have related to USS Moccasin (Submarine # 5), which was renamed A-4 in 1911.
