USS Dixie, a 6114-ton auxiliary cruiser, was built at as the merchant steamer El Rio at Newport News, Virginia, in 1893. Purchased by the Navy in April 1898, she was converted to an auxiliary cruiser and operated off Cuba and elsewhere in the West Indies during the Spanish-American War. Retained after the war, she was used as a transport and as a training ship until 1909, when she became one of the Navy's first tenders for torpedo craft and destroyers.
Dixie served as a tender, and occasionally as a transport, into the early 1920s. During World War I, she was stationed in Irish ports, providing support to U.S. Navy destroyers based there. Designated AD-1 in July 1920, Dixie was decommissioned in June 1922 and sold the following September.
