Atlantic (Coastal Steamer, 1894).
Originally named Ruth.
Served as USS Atlantic (ID # 3268, later YFB-3268) in 1918-1921
Atlantic, a 188 gross-ton coastal steamship, was built
under the name Ruth at Rockland, Maine, in 1894. She was
employed on ferry service along the Maine coast for a decade and
a half and, after being renamed Atlantic in about 1909-1910,
operated in the New York City area and later at Washington, D.C.
Taken over by the Navy in September 1918 and placed in service
as USS Atlantic (ID # 3268) soon afterwards, the steamer
was sent to South Carolina waters, where she transported personnel
and cargo between the Marine Corps training depot at Parris Island
and other facilities in the region. Atlantic was designated
YFB-3268 in mid-1920 and sank in late November of that year. Raised
within a short time, but apparently not returned to service, she
was sold in September 1921.
This page features the only views we have of the coastal
steamer Atlantic and USS Atlantic (ID # 3268).
