William Meyer was born on 22 June 1863 in Germany. He enlisted
in the U.S. Navy from the State of Illinois and served in the
Spanish-American
War as a crew member of the gunboat Nashville.
On 11 May 1898 he was one of several men who took part in a boat
expedition that cut the underwater telegraph cable off Cienfuegos,
Cuba. For his "extraordinary bravery and coolness" under
enemy fire during this operation, he was awarded the Medal
of Honor. William Meyer died on 6 September 1926 at Chicago,
Illinois.
