Preliminary Design Plan for a "Mine Laying Submarine" ... February 20, 1924
Preliminary design plan for a "Mine Laying Submarine". The Secretary of the Navy approved this plan on 10 May 1924 for use in developing the working drawings for a fleet submarine authorized for construction in Fiscal Year 1925. The preliminary design seen here was modified significantly following receipt of comments on the design, including the results of a conference held on 24 June 1924 at the Submarine Base, New London, CT. It was recast as seen in Photo # S-584-195. One ship, V-4 (SF-7, reclassified as SM-1 on 24 July 1924 and renamed Argonaut on 19 February 1931) was built to the final design.
This plan provides two 6-inch guns, diesel-electric machinery, and a surface speed of 15 knots in a ship 360 feet long on the waterline, 31 feet 2.5 inches in beam, and with a normal surface displacement of 2,780 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
