The original caption (dated 16 December 1949) reads: "During ceremonies today at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia, the USS Carpenter (DDK-825), the Navy's newest hunter-killer destroyer, was commissioned. The new destroyer is designed to hunt and kill high speed snorkel type submarines. It is equipped with the latest armament and sound detection devices and has a speed in excess of 30 knots. ... Commander James B. Grady, USN, ... is Commanding Officer of the new destroyer."
