Halftone reproduction of a photograph, copied from the official publication "Medal of Honor, 1861-1949, The Navy", page 230.
John D. New was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" while serving with the Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division in action against Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Group on 25 September 1944. When an enemy soldier unexpectantly hurled a grenade in the area where two Marines were directing mortar fire, he instantly realized the peril to his comrades and flung himself on the deadly missile. Absorbing the full impact of the explosion, New sacrificed his life to save the other Marines.
