Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia
Aerial photograph of the Naval Base pier area, taken from an
altitude of 2500 feet on 29 October 1948.
Fifty-two ships and harbor craft are present, including: LSTs,
APDs and harbor craft in the basin at left;
USS Mindoro (CVE-120) and USS Sicily (CVE-118),
alongside the pier on the right side of the basin;
USS Missouri (BB-63) and USS Adirondack (AGC-15),
alongside the right side of that pier;
Three DEs, USS Juneau (CL-119), USS Consolation
(AH-15), three DDs and USS Shenandoah (AD-26), on the
left side of the next pier to the right;
USS Mississippi (AG-128), USS Taconic (AGC-17)
and USS Marquette (AKA-95), on the right side of that
USS Okanogan (APA-220), USS Whitley (AKA-91)
and 3 DEs, on the left side of the pier in the photo's center;
A net tender (YN) at the head of that pier;
USS Fremont (APA-44) and four DEs and DDs, on the
right side of that pier;
Two LSTs; two large auxiliaries and three DDs, on the left
side the next pier to the right;
USS Macon (CA-132), USS Spokane (CL-120) and
one DD, on the right side of that pier;
USS Winston (AKA-94); USS Pawcatuck (AO-108);
USS Pecantonica (AOG-57) and three DEs, on the left side
of the pier to the right; and
Two DEs, on the right side of that pier.
