Normandy Invasion, June 1944
Explosion just behind "Utah" Beach, during the first days of the Normandy operation, circa 6-8 June 1944. This blast probably results from efforts to remove German land mines.
British LCT-996 is at the extreme right, stranded by low tide. British LCT-799 is alongside, just to the left, and several other landing craft are also present.
Note stakes in the foreground, possibly marking the positions of underwater obstructions.
