Makin Island Raid, August 1942
Two U.S. Marine Raiders pose with a pistol and a captured Japanese rifle on board USS Nautilus (SS-168) after returning from Makin Island, circa 18 August 1942.
The Marines are Corporal Edward R. Wygal (left), who used a hand grenade to wipe out an enemy machine gun, and First Sergeant C.L. Golasewski.
