Title: "AirCraft Carrier (1922) No. # 2" ... September 9, 1921 Note:
Description: Photo #: S-584-180 AirCraft Carrier (1922) No. # 2 ... September 9, 1921 Preliminary design plan for an aircraft carrier for the Fiscal Year 1922 shipbuilding program (Scheme No.2). This drawing was forwarded on 1 October 1921 to the Secretary of the Navy to illustrate the product of direction received following consideration of the Scheme A and Scheme B designs that had been forwarded on 12 May 1921 (see Photo # S-584-179). The General Board recommended selection of Scheme B with an island and funnel above deck on 27 June, approved by the Secretary of the Navy on 8 July. No ship was built to this design concept. This plan provided six 6-inch guns, electric machinery, and a speed of 34 knots in a ship 850 feet long on the waterline, 97 feet in beam, and with a normal surface displacement of 39,000 tons. The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 Spring Styles Book. U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
