USS DELAWARE Figurehead
Title: USS DELAWARE Figurehead
Caption: Bronze replica of the original wooden figurehead of Tamanend, chief of the Delaware Indians (d. 1693), from USS DELAWARE. Located at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, at the head of Stribling Walk in front of Bancroft Hall. The original figurehead was at that time kept at the Academy in Luce Hall. The bronze was presented to the USNA on 31 May 1930 by the class of 1891. The dedicatory speaker was Vice Admiral Arthur L. Willard, USN, commander, scouting fleet. The sponsor was Miss Dorothy Bierer. SecNav Charles F. Adams and Rear Admiral Samuel S. Robison, academy superintendent, were present. The pedestal was prepared by John W. Cross, from a 15 ton rough block of green Vermont granite. Inside the bronze were placed artifacts, wood from the interior of the head and heart of the original and the arrows, tomahawk, and culmet from the original.
