Visiting the Great Lakes Naval Museum
The Great Lakes Naval Museum is open to the public free of charge and is located at the Main Gate of Naval Station Great Lakes. The Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The museum is closed on federal holidays.
Parking is available for no fee in the Naval Station Great Lakes Visitors Parking lot immediately to the west of the Great Lakes Naval Museum.

Public transportation to the Great Lakes Naval Museum is available via Metra's Union Pacific North Line. The train stop is Great Lakes, and the museum is located at the Naval Station Great Lakes Main Gate.
Group Visits and Field Trips

Honors & Ceremonies
The Great Lakes Naval Museum is an official U.S. Navy museum under the guidance of the Naval History and Heritage Command. As such, the museum facility and its grounds are available for use by active-duty service members for military ceremonies such as reenlistments, retirements, promotions, and change of commands. For these types of ceremonies, space in the museum is available at no charge. Free parking is available directly in front of the museum in the Naval Station Great Lakes Visitor’s Center parking lot.
Food & Drink
No food or drink is allowed within the museum galleries unless special prior arrangements are made with the museum. Smoking is never allowed in the museum. Catering can be provided by private groups, or by the Naval Station Great Lakes Port O’Call Restaurant/Conference Center. For information about Port O’Call catering, please contact the Catering Manager at 847-688-6946 x5.
For smaller ceremonies which do not require set-up services (such as reenlistments), participants are required to confirm their ceremony reservations 3 days in advance. For larger ceremonies which require set-up services (such as retirements), participants are required to confirm their reservations 30 days in advance.
Please contact the museum’s Ceremony Coordinator as soon as possible for cancellations! Extending this courtesy not only helps our staff tremendously, but also frees up the time slot for others.
