Events GLNM Marshmallow CatapultSeptember 21, 2013 1:00-3:00pm The Great Lakes Naval Museum will be hosting a free "Marshmallow Catapult" science activity for children on Saturday, 21 September from 1:00-3:00pm. Children will learn about catapults and trajectories and the use of catapults in the modern Navy as well as their development and history in ancient warfare. Participants will build their own marshmallow catapult out of rubber bands and craft sticks! All craft supplies will be provided. Navy Birthday CelebrationOctober 12, 2013 2:00-3:00pm The Great Lakes Naval Museum will be hosting a Navy Birthday celebration on October 12 at 2:00pm. In addition to birthday cake and refreshments, guests will be invited to participate in a Navy trivia contest and the museum’s younger visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a “Pin the Hat on the Sailor” game. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each game. The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on 13 October 1775. This event is free and open to the public. Naval Station Great Lakes Cemetery TourOctober 19, 2013 beginning at 2:00pm Back by popular demand! The Great Lakes Naval Museum will be conducting a free tour of the Naval Station Great Lakes Cemetery. Included in this tour will be a visit to the gravesite of Joseph Wallace Gregg, the first recruit to graduate from Naval Station Great Lakes in 1911. The tour, which involves walking and standing, starts at the Great Lakes Naval Museum and will last one to one-and-a-half hours. This tour is free and open to the public, but registration must be made in advance by contacting (847) 688-3154 or glnm@navy.mil. “Haunted Halloween” Children’s ActivityOctober 26, 2013 beginning at 1:00pm This event is free and open to the public. During the celebration, children will have an opportunity to decorate their own sailor’s white hat, receive special Halloween treats, and hear naval-themed ghost stories told by museum volunteers. Children are also encouraged to wear their favorite Halloween costume. “Boatswain’s Whistle” Children’s ActivityNovember 16, 2013 beginning at 1:00pm This event is free and open to the public. Children will have the opportunity to learn about how whistles are used to signal sailors and then to make their own musical whistle. All craft supplies will be provided. Pearl Harbor Day CommemorationDecember 7, 2013 Join us on Saturday, 7 December 2013 to commemorate the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii that caused the death of over 2,000 sailors and launched the United States into the Second World War Nautical Holiday Ornament Craft Activity For ChildrenDecember 21, 2013 beginning at 1:00pm This event is free and open to the public. During the event, children will have an opportunity to create their own nautical-themed holiday ornament. All craft supplies will be provided. |
