Navy Unit Commendation
Fleet Air Support Unit, Binh Thuy
Republic of Vietnam

The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the NAVY UNIT COMMENDATION TO

FLEET AIR SUPPORT UNIT, BINH THUY
REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

For exceptionally meritorious service from 1 September 1969 to 30 June 1971 while engaged in armed conflict against enemy forces in the Mekong Delta Region of the Republic of Vietnam. During this period, Fleet Air Support Unit, Binh Thuy, in the areas of supply, maintenance, ordnance, and airfield control, supported the Navy's only two combat helicopter squadrons based in the Republic of Vietnam. Assuming full intermediate maintenance capability in September 1969, Fleet Air Support Unit, Binh Thuy increased its capability to ensure an extremely high level of combat aircraft readiness for Helicopter Attack (light) Squadron THREE and Light Attack Squadron FOUR. Working under extreme climatic and environmental conditions, erratic supply support, and the ever-present threat of enemy terrorist ground and mortar attacks, the men of the Fleet Air Support Unit fulfilled and executed the diverse and varied tasks assigned to them as a direct combat support unit. In addition to the intermediate level repair of aircraft components, the unit maintained a complete aviation supply department in a high state of readiness; ordered, stocked, and delivered all ammunition used by Light Attack Squadron FOUR against the enemy; controlled a daily average of 306 airfield operations; and maintained 141 pieces of group support equipment. By their courage, professionalism and unswerving devotion to duty, the officers and men of Fleet Air Support Unit, Binh Thuy upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
