Captain John Paul Jones,
Continental Navy
During much of the
time he spent on the continent, Commodore Jones was highly esteemed
by the nobility. These calling cards, presented by distinguished
French and Russian acquaintances, attest to the Chevalier's popularity.
According to the fashion of the day, some of the cards were printed;
others took the form of colorful playing cards with the caller's
name written on the back. This sampling includes a dinner invitation
from the Comte de Raineval penned on the reverse side of a King
of Hearts.
