In celebration of their 90th anniversary, the global consulting firm of Booz Allen Hamilton, Inc. donated $25,000 to the Naval Historical Foundation.
The Foundation will administer a preservation grant to identify, document, and preserve materials in the Admiral George Preble collection of the Navy Department Library. It will also assist other ongoing preservation projects in the Navy’s oldest library.
A noted author and scholar, Admiral Preble served in the Navy from 1835 until his retirement in 1878. He collected valuable navy-related materials that included early naval registers, naval tracts, and other works. His collection has often been described as containing some of the rarest U.S. naval publications in existence.
Retired Admiral George Emery, another naval scholar and avid collector of naval-related materials, will prepare a finding aid for this collection. Its publication will give the public and historical communities added insight into Admiral Preble’s life and his collection.
The Navy Department Library, founded in March 1800, contains the largest and most comprehensive collection of United States naval literature.
