Asked Questions Ball caps bearing the names of ships or other commands are not items of official Navy issue, and are not centrally manufactured or stocked by the Navy. Ships purchase caps from commercial manufacturers, and sell them to crew members and others through the ship's store. Most, if not all, manufacturers will make up caps to order for any present or former ship. When inquiring about caps, specify the full name and hull number of the ship desired.
Some manufacturers embroider lettering directly onto the front
of the cap. Others embroider it onto a separate pice of cloth,
and then fasten the piece to the front of the cap. Some caps may
include a silhouette of the ship or the ship's insignia.
