image of Navy Silver Star Medal"For gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the USS PLEDGE while engaged in mine sweeping operations in densely mined waters off Wonsan, Korea and in areas subjected to heavy gunfire from enemy shore batteries during the period 10 to 12 Oct. 1950. His inspiring leadership and professional ability contributed to the successful clearance of mine free channels and anchorage areas off Wonsan. His loyalty and steadfast devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U. S. Naval Service."
