West Caruth—a steel-hulled, single-screw cargo vessel built under a United States Shipping Board contract at San Pedro, Calif., by the Southwestern Shipbuilding Co., and completed in 1919—was inspected at the 12th Naval District on 18 February 1919 for possible Navy use as a service collier. Although assigned the Navy identification number, Id. No. 3850, she was never taken over by the Navy.
