Walrus

 

A gregarious, aquatic mammal, related to the seal and found in Arctic waters. The walrus is a prime source of leather, oil, ivory, and food.

Walrus (Submarine No. 14) was renamed K-4 (q.v.) on 17 November 1911.

The name Walrus was assigned to SS-431—a Balao-class submarine to be built at Philadelphia, Pa., by the Cramp Shipbuilding Co.—but the contract for her construction was cancelled on 29 July 1944.

Walrus (SS-437)—a Balao-class submarine—was laid down on 21 June 1945, at Groton, Conn., by the Electric Boat Co.; launched on 20 September 1946; and sponsored by Miss Winifred P. Nagle. However, work on the submarine was suspended on 7 January 1946 when the contract for her construction was cancelled. Her hull was assigned to the New London Group of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet on 9 December 1952. Her name was struck from the Navy list on 9 June 1958.
