Vara—a yacht constructed in 1929 at Bristol, R.I., by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co.—was acquired by the Navy from Harold S. Vanderbilt on 7 October 1940. Converted for naval service by the New York Navy Yard, the ship was reclassified as a patrol craft and commissioned as PC-509 on 27 December 1941. She was subsequently renamed Valiant (q.v.) on 15 July 1943 and simultaneously reclassified as PYc-51.
