In need of fast, powerful warships to strengthen its blockading forces, the Union Navy made plans in 1864 to build eight new sloops-of-war in Federal navy yards. Taghkanic was one of these ships, but her construction apparently was not assigned to any specific navy yard before it was obviated by the collapse of the Confederacy. Her name was dropped from the "List of Vessels of the U.S. Navy" sometime in 1866.
