The second St. Louis, a stern-wheel, casemate gunboat, was launched on 12 October 1861 and had numerous engagements against Confederate works on western rivers as a unit of the Western Gunboat Fleet before being renamed Baron de Kalb (q.v.) on 8 September 1862.
