The decisive breakout of the Normandy beachhead occurred at St. Lo, France, on 18 July 1944.

CVE-63 was launched as Midway (q.v.) but was renamed St. Lo on 10 October 1944 to free the name Midway for the attack carrier, CVB-41, then being built.
