Paul James Register, born at Bismarck, N. Dak., on 5 November 1899, graduated from the Naval Academy and was commissioned ensign in June 1920. Assigned to duties on shore and at sea, with both the Battle and Scouting Fleets, during the interwar period, he was promoted to lieutenant commander from l July 1939 and on 20 March 1941 he reported for duty on Arizona (BB-39). He was killed when that battleship was sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941.
