Patrol (CG) was built in 1917 at City Island, N.Y. for the United States Coast Guard; was purchased by the Navy 11 April 1918; and commissioned at New York soon thereafter, Quartermaster Frederick T. Ford, USNRF, in command.
During World War I, Patrol served on section patrol with the 3rd Naval District forces out of New York.
Patrol was returned to the USCG at New York 28 August 1919.
