Missouri

The first Missouri was named for the Missouri River, an Indian name meaning "muddy waters," the second, third, and fourth Missouris were named for the 24th State, admitted to the Union on 10 August 1821.

The fourth Missouri (SSN-780) was laid down on 27 September 2008 at Groton, Conn., by Electric Boat Division, General Dynamics Corp.; launched on 20 November 2009; sponsored on 5 December 2009 by Mrs. Robert Gates [Rebecca], wife of the Secretary of Defense; and commissioned on 31 July 2010, Comdr. Timothy Rexrode in command.
