
Leonidas
Both ships retained their former names. Leonidas was a heroic king of Sparta who died at Thermopylae fighting to hold back the Persian hosts of Xerxes in 480 B.C.

The first Leonidas was a bark purchased at Bedford, Mass., 27 November 1861 for use in the “Stone Fleet.” She was sunk the following month in the channel leading to Savannah, Ga.
