LST-1143 was laid down on 31 January 1945 at Seneca, III., by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 27 April 1945; sponsored by Mrs. Dorothea S. Freeman; and placed in reduced commission on 9 May 1945.
Decommissioned on 21 May 1945, LST-1143 underwent conversion to a landing craft repair ship, commissioning as Daedalus (ARL-35) (q.v.) on 19 October 1945.
