Dakotan (No. 3382) was built in 1912 by Maryland Steel Co., Sparrows Point, Md.; acquired by the Navy 29 January 1919; and commissioned the same day, Lieutenant Commander J. Simmons, USNRF, in command.

Assigned to the U. S. She was decommissioned at New York City 31 July 1919 and returned to her owner the same day.
