J. D. Clarke, a sidewheel steamer, operated as a Confederate army transport in the Red River. On 9 April 1863 Admiral Farragut on board USS Hartford gave chase to two steamers outside the mouth of the Red River and captured J. D. Clarke. On 10 April the captors removed the steamer's machinery and scuttled her.
