The first Charleston, a galley identical to Mars, was built at Charleston, S.C., in 1798, and commanded by "Captain-of-a-Galley" James Payne. During the Quasi-War with France, Charleston was used for the defense of the coast of South Carolina. She was sold at Charleston about 1 February 1802.
