The third Birmingham (SSN-695) was launched by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Va., on 29 October 1977 and was commissioned on 16 December 1978.
Birmingham was decommissioned on 22 December 1997 and struck from the Navy list on the same day. She was disposed of by submarine recycling on 22 December 1997.
