A valuable timber tree, whose species is often indicated adjectivally, i.e., white birch, cherry birch, etc.
-----
The name Birch was assigned to the projected boom (net) tender, YW 3, on 22 August 1940; but it was discovered that nine of the 32 names assigned were already borne by other Navy ships or would be assigned to Coast Guard tenders. Accordingly, the name of YN 3 was changed from Birch to Boxwood (q.v.) on 16 October 1940.
