A milkfish of the Pacific ocean, usually found off the coast of Mexico and in waters off the Hawaiian Islands.

The name Awa was assigned to SS-409 on 23 August 1942, but this Balao-class fleet submarine was renamed Piper (q.v.) on 31 January 1944, less than a month and a half prior to the laving of her keel.
